Wanting to spread color across a large area of space without using light or gallons of paint, I needed something different. I purchased several large rolls of Pink Kraft Butcher Paper. Jame P. created the painted tubes that were suspended on fishing wire giving the illusion of floating in space. Virginia Dare with her painted face, would push the tubes across the room as people walked inside creating a surreal effect in the dimly lit room.
The rules are no folds or creases. The paper is held up by thumb tacks and proportional gravity created from the paper positioning. The submerged visual effect comes from the ribbons, waves and splashes of color against large areas of wall space or within a confined space.
Creating the "Vertical Pool" where the participants within the space are standing within a pool of flowing shapes and color.
The Four Phases
1) Pink & Bleach Large Sheets of Pink construction paper
2) Multi-colored sheets of paper
3) Rolls of Pink Kraft Butcher Paper stretched across the room, framing the other works in the exhibition.
4) Self-contained small room with rolls of Pink Kraft Butcher Paper along with Jame P's painted tubes suspended by wire and Virginia Dare crowd interaction.
There were a total of 8 different exhibitions in 6 locations in 2 different cities from 2001 until 2010.
Explosion at the Greenwich was the conclusion to this series. I started to become concerned about the paper waste from each of these shows and I stopped the practice. I had thought about shredding it up and turning the pulp into many multi colored sculptures, but that idea never fully manifested itself over time.
